THE
WORLDS.
Together, these events will see up to 580 sailors competing,
potentially representing over 60 countries. The age spread
of competitors between the two events can range over 60
years. The event is expected to require upwards of 800 volunteers
over its duration, and will see hundreds of eager spectators
and family members attending.
Cumulatively, this will
likely be the largest sailing event in Canadian history.
The event was last hosted in Canada in 1980 in Kingston,
Ontario. The Laser class is now the largest adult and youth
racing class in the world, and is the most active Olympic
class sailboat worldwide. To date over 190,000 Laser sailboats
have been produced, with thousands new made every year.
St. Margaret's Bay, Halifax
St. Margaret's Bay is known as one of the
premiere sailing venues in North America, and for good reason.
Often referred to as simply "The Bay", this pristine
body of water bay consists of approximately 5x7 miles of
unobstructed, clear Atlantic ocean. The racing area is free
of shoals, islands, commercial traffic, and currents. It
is aligned with the prevailing southwest winds and generates
a 15+ knot breeze on sunny days, often with large ocean
swell. Typically, the sea breeze will maintain its direction
within 5-10 degrees throughout the day. The air temperature
is usually low-to-mid 20's (70F), with the water temperature
around 15 degrees (60F). The late summer months are often
clear, with few days of rain.
